Let's take a step back and discuss the small gesture in its essence. It's a known fact that "a small gesture can mean a lot," but I find that these gestures are extremely overlooked. In a professional sense, the little extra things you do can help build your brand, identity, and reputation. They can set you apart from the other interviewees, employees, and co-workers. So what small gestures am I talking about?
The (Scarlett) Letter - I had to slip that joke in there, sorry not sorry. By letter, I mean a thank-you note. After each interview, and even after an important meeting with someone of significance, it is a MUST- write a thank-you note to them for taking the time to meet with you. You don't even have to wait to mail it (it would be awful if your note got lost and arrived a week later... not only tacky, but now irrelevant.) Slip it in the office mailbox before you even leave the building. Tips on the letter itself:
- Keep the design neat, clean, and in neutral colors. Bold colors and details are fun, but you want to remain professional. Plus, less is always more. Let the words inside the note be the star.
- Make sure you write legibly. Hopefully this is a given.
- Make sure your tone in the note is thankful and professional. Even if your interview was amazing and turned somewhat casual towards the end, make sure the last word you leave is composed and memorable in a professional way.
***If you are parting with a company or client, it is easy to feel a little awkward. However, leaving on a positive note will definitely play out in your favor. I recently finished up an internship and left everyone a note and some donuts- a small gesture but definitely helps you leave as gracefully and respectfully as possible. So be careful about how you make your grand exit!
Be on time - I'm guilty of this one (New Year's Resolution is going well, though!) Showing up on time says more about your character than you would think. Not only will you not miss a thing, but it shows whoever you meeting that you respect their time, which will go a long way. Kudos if you arrive early!
Little Miss Sunshine - I'm not saying you have to be Polly Positive every minute of every day, but keeping a sunny demeanor will not only keep your spirits up, but it might even brighten someone's day. You never know who might need a smile or a friendly compliment. Plus, when you're the one in need of some sunshine, you'll receive it back. That's just how karma works.
Do your homework - This is more specific to your actual work, but make sure you know exactly what you need to before heading into any meeting. Again, this shows your peers that you value their time and take responsibility for your portion of the project.
Leave your mark - This happens to be my theme for 2013. I was at an event when someone said what would become one of my favorite quotes, "Contribute everywhere you go." I love this. Wherever life takes you, share what makes you special with everyone you're surrounded with. Spread your positive energy, invigorate people with your work ethic, inspire people with a few kind words scribbled on Post-It notes hidden in the office. Leave your mark, and you'll be remembered long after you've left.
